Busteni is a small mountain town in the north of the county Prahova, in the center of Romania. It is located in the Prahova Valley, at the bottom of the Bucegi mountains, that have a maximum altitude of 2505 m. Its name literally means tree-logs in Romanian.
Busteni's average altitude is 900 m. It is one of the most popular mountain resorts, offering spectacular views, with lots of year-round tourism opportunities, ranging from skiing to mountain climbing.
The town and the surrounding mountains were the site of military confrontations in 1916, during the World War I. A large commemorative monument (about 25 m high), Heroes' Cross (Crucea Eroilor) lies atop nearby Caraiman Peak, at nearly 2260 m. The monument is lighted at night and is visible from virtually everywhere in Busteni. Funicular Busteni - Babele In 1873, the place situated between the “Stag’s Valley” (in Romanian “Valea Cerbului”) and the “White Valley” (“Valea Alba”), was named “La Busteni”;In 1887, Ion Kalinderu, the presidency’s administrator, built the Primary School of Busteni (now days, the House of Culture);Between 1887 – 1889, the main Church from Busteni was built in the Byzantine style.In 1911 the prince Gheorghe Grigore Cantacuzino is building the “Zamora” Castle;Between 1926 – 1928, at the altitude of 2291m, the biggest monument from the SE of Europe was built, named “The heroes cross”, dedicated to Romanian soldiers who died in the first world war; Busteni's municipal council Starting with 1972 Busteni-Babele funicular is starting to work, on a length of 4200m and a altitude difference of 1100m. The highest distance above the ground is over “Valea Spumoasa”, 190m. The average population is 15,000 inhabitants, although numbers vary greatly because of tourism. The main local industries are wood industry and tourism. Many holiday houses have been recently built in the town. Busteni is very accessible from any place in Romania. DN1 (the first national road) is crossing Busteni, on the route Bucuresti – Brasov. From Otopeni Airport, it will take you 1h30min to reach Busteni, from Bucharest the time needed is around 1h45min, and 30 min from Brasov. |
